Jivamukti Yoga Jivamukti Yoga is probably the latest form of Hatha Yoga. It is the brainchild of was of David Life and Sharon Gannon, created in1984. Very much like Ashtanga Yoga, Jivamukti Yoga is dynamically physical. Then again, it is far more intellectually stimulating. In Jivamukti Yoga there is a lot of emphasis on the educational aspect of the practice. Here, students also learn how the philosophies of Yoga came about. Jivamukti is a Sanskrit word meaning "liberation while living." It combines an energetic physical practice with strong basics in ancient spiritual traditions of Yoga. Jivamukti Yoga’s distinct style puts together the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of Yoga practices into a modern lifestyle. Best part is, it does so without losing sight of the ancient and universal goal of the practice – liberation. The Jivamukti Yoga practice offers a realistic and empirically oriented life philosophy. It is based on ethical precepts designed to guide inner and outer work, and an original, creative approach to living and being.

A typical Jivamukti Yoga class will be an energetic physical and spiritual practice. So much so, that, it goes beyond the limitations often imposed by the mind. It incorporates chanting, asanas, music, meditation, and devotional practices. The 5 elements that comprise the basis of each class are: scriptures, Bhakti (devotion to God), ahimsa (nonviolence and compassion), Nada Yoga (deep listening), and meditation (connection with the unchanging reality within).

Co-founders of the idea of Jivamukti Yoga and the Center in New York City, Sharon Gannon and David Life are also coauthors of Jivamukti Yoga: Practices for Liberating Body and Soul and The Art of Yoga. Originally an animal rights activist Sharon comes from a background in the performing arts. David, also an artist, used to run the Life Cafe in Manhattan for many years. It was a hot spot for music, art, and poetry. Both have studied yoga intensively with many masters.
